FROM THE EDITOR

Every so often, I give Rick Tate a respite from having to come up with an article for the newsletter...so here goes:

“March”…the word has multiple meanings…it’s not just the third month of the calendar, it also brings to mind images of military groups or high school bands walking in lockstep, of protesters or volunteers walking for a cause, or of something abstract advancing, as in “time marches”. But one thing all of these have in common…”March” refers to “advancing, moving forward”.
So, March is a good month to think about moving our songwriting forward. There are a lot of ways to do this. It might be as simple as deciding to dedicate a specific time or place to do your writing; it could be reaching out to a new co-writer or trying to write in a different style or genre; maybe trying to use some different chord progressions or rhythms in your songs or finding new topics to write about.

Also, March is the month in which spring begins…and spring is a time of re-birth, of new beginnings. Or, in our terms, a time to start writing some new songs!

At any given moment, I typically have a dozen or more ideas in some stage of development…some lead to co-writes, others might be waiting for me to figure out exactly what I want them to be.

A lot of you know that I regularly travel to Nashville – one week, every other month – to write, network, and play writer’s nights, and listen to other writers. I really enjoy the co-writing process – talking to my co-writer friends, kicking around ideas, and getting their perspectives on a variety of subjects. It’s also fun to listen to songs by other writers – sometimes those can stimulate ideas for me, whether it’s that someone does a song about something I’ve never considered before (like Jerry K. Green’s “Tripod, the 3-Legged Dog”), or perhaps I’ll get an idea because of the “But, what if…” aspect – not what’s in the song, but what’s NOT in it!

In any case, this is a perfect time for all of us to rededicate ourselves to songwriting!

And now you have your “Marching” orders…so, until next month, keep writing!
John
