FROM THE PRESIDENT

A lesson in thinking!

Education and wisdom do not have the same meaning.  I have met some very wise people who had limited education, and regrettably I have met some highly educated people who seem to have no wisdom at all.  I will not go naming names here, because there are many who have a lot of ammunition on me, and I will not start a war of wits with them.  Besides, I need this lesson myself.

I once noticed a manager of a store, frantically rushing around before an audit, trying to clean the business and get ready so the auditor would give him a good report.  The business only had one janitor, and the manager often complained that the janitor worked slow and was never seemed worried about anything. The janitor was always doing his job but would casually strike up conversations with other employees about their work and their families, then move on to his next task.  Well, this day was no different it seemed to the manager.  The janitor was steadily working his job, but the manager was rushing back and forth to the trash can with hands full of trash and wrappers, while the janitor was pulling the trash can with him to the pile of trash, bending over one time and scooping up that pile, the on to the next job.  This auditor happened to take notice.  The manager was exhausted while the janitor was working at a steady pace.  When the auditor approached the manager, the manager immediately apologized for the appearance of the store, even though by now the store looked clean, and said that he only had one janitor which had trouble keeping up.  The auditor quickly informed the manager that the janitor is not the problem, in fact he may be one of your most efficient employees, taking the trash can to trash instead of the trash to the trash can.

Wisdom is the opportunity of what you know and the ability to learn and apply successfully.  I have said jokingly that "there is a thin line between laziness and wisdom:  one gets out of work while the other makes the work easier."  Now how to make this work for us songwriters?  Organize your time so that you can be more efficient and not feel that you are deserting your duties when you sit down to a a break and write a song or practice.  Break that pattern that makes you get halfway finished.  Start with another method, instead of starting with the first verse, start with the title only, or the chorus.  You are plugged into something when you get inspired, add to that with fresh ideas.  Do not rely on inspiration alone.

Use a calendar to note of events coming up that you might be interested in doing.  This hectic and busy life is the life that listeners of our songs are wrapped around.  Help them navigate through it.  By having a better planned life, you can accomplish the same task while enjoying the time between.  Take just one small tip from that janitor, take the trash can to the trash.  Ouch....I needed that!
